The City’s waste hauler, Waste Resources, Inc (WRI), seeks to increase trash rates in order to recover costs consistent with the solid waste service levels currently provided and resulting from new State organics recycling requirements. The City’s current rates (which dropped significantly in 2018) resulted from the previous City Council’s agreement with a prior trash hauler that struggled to maintain adequate service levels in Hawaiian Gardens due to its low rates. Waste Resources took over that agreement at those same rates, with the understanding that rates would need to be reconsidered in the future to maintain acceptable service while recovering the costs for providing that service. After delaying seeking a rate change last year due to COVID, WRI is asking the City Council to consider the rate change now, due to current rates being too low for WRI, given the cost of service.
