Construction for the Levee Improvements Project is underway, which requires pedestrian and bicyclist detours onto public streets while the project is in construction. Due to the increased pedestrian and cyclist usage, the designated detour route on Edgewater Boulevard, from Beach Park Boulevard to Baffin Street, will receive temporary bike lanes to enhance safety.
Currently, Edgewater Boulevard is an existing Class III Bikeway, which allows for shared use of the travel lane between bicyclists and drivers. Recently, however, many bicyclists have begun riding on the sidewalk, creating a hazard for pedestrians. To enhance the safety of pedestrian and cyclist usage, a temporary Class II Bikeway will be installed, providing a dedicated-striped lane on the roadway for one-way travel for bicycles on the street.
The City’s contractor, Chrisp Company, will begin the striping construction work on March 10, 2021. Barring any weather-related delays, work is expected to be completed within one to two weeks. Construction hours on Edgewater Boulevard are typically between the hours of 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Given current traffic conditions brought on by the current public health situation, the City will allow work between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Should traffic conditions change, work will revert back to typical construction hours. During construction, lanes may be temporarily closed, and on-street parking prohibited during the day of work. Access to driveways may also be restricted. Please follow posted signs and traffic control measures for safe travel through construction zones.
The City appreciates everyone’s patience and cooperation for any inconveniences caused by construction activities as we strive to improve the accessibility and safety of our residents. Please contact the Public Works Department at 650-286-3270 if you have any questions or comments.
